Fern Horton of East Jordan died October 8, 2017 in her home after a short illness.  She was 91.  Fern was born to Hazen and Berenice (Pear) Horton on September 26, 1926 in Davison, Michigan.  Fern moved to East Jordan in 1963.  In 1966, she and her life partner, Helen Hayes King, purchased a bar “Fern & Helen’s Tavern” most recently known as “The Tilted Skillet”.  They sold the bar in 1978. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post #228  in Boyne City and the V.F.W. #7580 Auxiliary in East Jordan.  Fern enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing, bowling, softball, bingo and the casino, and gardening. Fern was feisty, funny, and kind.  She and Helen helped many people in East Jordan over the years.

She is survived by one sister-in-law, Phyllis Horton of Flint; two nephews, Steve Horton of Grayling, Douglas Horton of Davison; one great nephew, Nicholas Horton; one great niece, Alicia Hardacre; and close friends Stacey Chipman and Scott Marrow.

Fern was preceded in death by her partner Helen King, her parents, and one brother, Richard Horton.

Friends and family are invited to a memorial luncheon on November 4, 2017 at the American Legion Hall in East Jordan at 2:00 pm. The family asks that anyone wishing to offer a contribution in Fern’s honor please consider the American Cancer Association.
