Vera Thelma McKinnon, 97, of East Jordan, died Sunday, September 1, 2019, at McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey.
She was born August 24, 1922, in Port Huron, Michigan, the daughter of Ole and Vera (Barr) Olson. She moved to East Jordan at the age of four years old with her parents. She graduated from East Jordan High School in 1940.
On June 27, 1942, in East Jordan, she married Richard A. McKinnon.
Thelma was a member of the Community of Christ Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Post #7580 in East Jordan, the East Jordan Red Hatters and was a past president of the East Jordan Garden Club. In 2008, Thelma was honored in East Jordan as “Mother of the Year”.
She loved taking care of her family and friends. For years and up to just a few days ago, she worked as a seamstress. She also enjoyed and was known for her baking and cake decorating.
Thelma is survived by six sons, Richard (Betty) McKinnon, Jr. of Shelby, North Carolina, James (Kay) McKinnon of Onondaga; Bruce (Stacey) McKinnon ofTehachapi, California, Brian (Janice) McKinnon of Rogers, Arkansas, Daniel McKinnon of East Jordan and Glen McKinnon of Lampasas, Texas; a daughter-in-law, Janet McKinnon of East Jordan; twenty grandchildren; and twenty seven great grandchildren; one brother, Gerald “Jerry” (Carol) Olson of East Jordan; one sister, Bernice Carey of East Jordan; one brother-in-law, Dan Faust of East Jordan; two sisters-in-law, Janet (Gerald “Jerry) Roberts of East Jordan and Lily Olson of Petoskey; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard A. McKinnon, Sr. on July 6, 2013; one son, Donald R. McKinnon on February 28, 2013; three brothers, Harry, Ray and Walter Olson; and one sister, Hilda Lou Faust.
Funeral services will be Thursday, September 5, 2019, at 11:00 A.M. at the Harvest Barn Church in East Jordan. Interment will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery in East Jordan.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the Penzien Funeral Homes, Inc. in East Jordan. In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be directed to the East Jordan Garden Club, PO Box 1323, East Jordan, MI 49727.
