Phyllis Childs was born in Cleveland, Ohio on August 31, 1935. She graduated from Cleveland Heights High School in 1953, and received her BA and MS degrees from the University of Michigan in 1957 and 1960, respectively. PHD studies continued at Northwestern University and Case Western Reserve.
A 42 year career in speech pathology/audiology included public school, hospital, clinic, and university settings. She wrote numerous workbooks, journal articles, and was active in professional organizations. Following “Retirement”, she re-located to her vacation home in East Jordan where she worked for Char-Em Intermediate School District for 2 years and also subbed in the local schools. She participated on the East Jordan Family Health Center Board and various other community organizations including the Jordan Valley Community Band, Crossroads Resale Shop, the Jordan Valley District Library Board, the Michigan Works Learning Lab, and the Presbyterian Church. Music, art, golf, gardening, X-Country skiing, reading and sewing were favorite hobbies, which she enjoyed. Foremost was her family.
Phyllis’ husband, Brian Childs, preceded her in death in 2015. Her survivors included her daughters; Patricia Childs, Kari (Mason) Beard, Susan (Don) Crum, and Nancy (Paul) Taylor; grandchildren, Abby, Brooke, and Will Beard and Kate and Jack Taylor.
There will be no funeral services. Phyllis requested that any memorials be directed to a charity of choice.
